The Programme:
- Has built 13 houses for destitude clients.
- Has held a two days workshop in Lokitaung and an other workshop in Kalokol.
- Organised Easter Celebration for all the clients.
- Organised Christmas celebration for all the clients.
- Has organised meeting for the clients and taught them about prevention of diseases and how to improve their health.
- During the time when there was no food distribution from World Vision an average of 60 clients on the emergency food weekly got maize/beans and twice a month salt and oil.
- Was attending the food distributions from World Vision to be sure that the old people are getting their share.
- Has given each client a piece of soap every month and when it is necessary the needy ones get clothes, bedding, utensils etc.
- Has regularly contact with an orthopaedic technician to make and repair artificial limbs and wheelchairs.
- Organised two times a workshop for members of Small Christian Community and taught them about awareness of the needy old people in their community.
- Got wheelchairs, walking frames and other medical equipment from the Netherlands.
- Sent the nurse and home visitors to the Meds courses.
- Finished the report about the food situation survey, held during the Christmas celebration 2003. Conclusion of the survey is that all the clients were malnourished and a group of 44% of them are severe malnourished.
- Organised a survey in December 2004 to assess the nutritional status of the clients.
- Has bought a compound in Kanamkemer (water pump was already there) and the survey is in the process.
- Continue adult education to four handicapped clients (special cases).
- Has taken twenty clients to Lokitaung for eye clinic. Two staff members took care of them.
- Try to build up cost sharing for clients who are able to cost share.
- Is sponsoring a student for nursing and one home visitor is doing "distance learning" social work and community development.
- Regularly contact with the chancellor of the diocese, DO, Forest office, Chiefs, Social Ministry, social service, Hospital, Liliane Foundation, Help Age, and other public institutions for a smooth running of the programme.
- Organised a workshop for the staff members about making contact with new clients and try to find out the background of the client.
- Organised two times an outing for the staff.
- Is building up a Board Management Team.
Positive experience:
- The Ewoi Centre has a hard working staff.
- Since August 2004 a qualified social worker has been appointed.
- The Board of LDH exempted the Ewoi clients from cost sharing in the hospital.
- The special case of Juma ( a homeless metal handicapped man) finished in a positive way.
- The Ewoi programme got an amount of money to assist grandmothers, who are taking care of their grandchildren, who are most of the time "aids orphans".
- Several times the Diocese assisted the Ewoi programme with food.
- Re-opening of the Nakiriamriamet mobile clinic in August.
- The impression of the staff members is that the clients are in a better nutritional status. The report of the survey December 2004 will give the right outcome.
- The two bathrooms, we have built in November 2003, are very useful. Every week many clients are taking bath or wash their clothes
- Since March 2004 the office is using a computer with solar power.
- Since August the student, the programme sponsored for social work, finished her studies and is employed (probation) in the programme.
Problems we have in the Programme.
- Food situation. Many times the Ewoi office asked World Vision food to distribute to the
- Old weak ones, but never with positive results. They have to wait too long, they are weak, or they lost their ID card. The younger people send them away.
- Grandmothers who have to take care of their grandchildren
- Unreliable information given by the people to home visitors for enrolment
- It is still very difficult to involve members of Small Christian Communities in the work of the Ewoi programme. They asked for money.
- Adult Education of the Diocese did not start the education for the handicapped.
- Qualified staff members are leaving their job without handing over their duties. They accept jobs in NGO's who are paying very high salaries, which the programme can not afford.
- Some of the old, weak and suffering under the Ewoi programme don't get food during distribution. Many of the old people did not get food during the distributions. In 2002 and 2003 the Programme applied to the Social Service for wheelchairs and tricycles, but did not get wheelchairs or other aids.
- The programme has not find a long-term sponsor. It depends on a well wishers.
Plans for the year 2005
- Continuing mentioned activities of 2004
- Continuing doing workshops to teach S.C.C. members how to take care of the poor elderly and needy ones.
- Try to build up a good relationship with the Small Christian Communities.
- Send clients with eye problems to the Eye camp in Lokitaung.
- Organising workshops for the staff members and give them chances to upgrade themselves.
- General meetings with the clients to make them aware about their health, gender, HIV aids.
- Continuing to improve the cost sharing for the clients who are able to do so.
- Extending the mobile clinics.
- Trying to find a long-term sponsor.
- Sponsoring a staff member to trained as a nurse.
